Overview

If you are an LGBTQIA2S+ individual during the current political crisis and persecution, you may be considering fleeing to Canada.

The community here is strong and we are fighting HARD to bring any one of you into safety. It’s not perfect here, especially in conservative led provinces and with the impending election in October (which I will expand on in a later section). But our pride and advocacy communities are tight-knit and are working closely to fight against Anti LGBTQ policies that are plaguing at-risk populations globally.

Applying for Refugee Status

Currently, US citizens are not eligible for making a refugee request at the border unless they qualify for specific exemptions or exceptions. Current border policy instructs that anyone who applies at the border who does not qualify for legal exemptions or exceptions will be denied entry and returned to the United States.

Applicants may still enter Canada legally and apply once inside the country, or from outside the country. Application from outside the country requires a sponsorship from a recognized third party organization or an approved private sponsorship. This option is not applicable to those who have incomplete documentation or have had their documents seized as this prevents legal exit out of the United States.
