Moving Your Belongings Overseas
You will have to consider what personal belongings to take with you on your move.
The Bare Minimum
If you are driving to the US or Mexico, you have the luxury of packing your vehicle with stuff. Just be sure not to bring any fresh fruits or vegetables or cannabis.
If you are flying, you will be able to take a carry-on suitcase, a personal bag or backpack, and checked bags. Different airlines have different checked bag policies, including number of bags, bag size, and weight allowances. For example, on international flights, United allows up to two checked bags but charges $100 for any overweight bags and an additional $100 for oversized bags, with each additional bag (beyond the allowed two) costing $100.
International Shippers
Some offer end-to-end services. They may require their staff to pack your items so that they can accurately vouch for the shipment's contents at customs.
You can expect to pay by the pound, with differing rates based on type of container/palette used.
An example moving quote in 2025 from Chicago to Barcelona came out to $11,000 for a 1-bedroom house worth of stuff.
Moving Appliances and Electronics
Most electronics (computers, TVs, game consoles, etc) can handle 220V/50hz outlets. Just check the label on the back. You'll either need a plug adapter or some electronic devices can have their power cables switched out for foreign formats.
However, many appliances and power tools that draw more power won't work. You can try getting a step-down power converter, but experiences with these tend to be poor.
