Netherlands/Budget
Upfront Expenses
TODO: Add in upfront expenses that may be incurred when moving to the Netherlands such as transport of house hold goods, moving pets, initial cost of DAFT, potential makelaar commissions, etc
Monthly Expenses
This can provide you with guidance on what kind of monthly expenses you may incur and assist you with working out what your budget requirement will look like.
Your personal requirements may vary based on location, transport requirements, dietary needs, additional healthcare support and family situation.
- Health insurance cost €156-€180 per adult per month (depending on provider and options). Health insurance is free for children until they are 18 years old.
- Electricity and gas can cost around €150 per month but depends on your provider and your household consumption (better insulation means smaller heating costs)
- Mobile phone costs should be around €20 a month for a SIM with unlimited calls, texts and normally at least 10GB on a yearly contract.
- As the mobile space is saturated, the number of deals and combinations are numerous and tend to offer cheaper contract starting prices for the first few months which increase significantly later on. Be careful about the details here. You'll also find some providers offer combination deals for mobile and home internet along with TV packages.
- Decent providers to use include KPN and Vodafone.
- Home internet costs about €45 for a 1Gbps symmetrical connection per month depending on the provider.
- Decent providers to use include KPN, Ziggo and Odido.
- Water should cost about €15 per month per person.
- Food would depend on dietary needs but fresh fruit, vegetables and basic stables are relatively inexpensive. Meat is the most expensive commodity. You can feed the family on €15-20 per family meal. Takeaway can be significantly pricier. As a recommendation, I would suggest planning out some common meals for yourself using the website of common Dutch supermarkets to get a feel of these expenses:
Education
- Dutch school education is free for all children. This includes special needs schools if your child requires additional assistance.
- University is heavily subsidized and currently costs about €3,000 per year depending on the course and the university.
- Private schools are exist as international schools and tend to be very expensive as they cater to the international community exclusively.
Rental costs
This is very dependent on the location of the property, size and nature of the rental so I will put a broad ballpark figure here on the outer boundaries of what is normally seen.
Be aware that rentals under about €850 a month are reserved for social housing and have a large list of requirements and waiting lists.
Rental for the private market ranges for a single bedroom flat goes from around €1,400 to €2,900 a month with even higher amounts been seen in highly desirable locations like Amsterdam. You can find cheaper outside of the Randstad region (North Holland, South Holland and Utrecht) so it depends on your location requirements.
