This is an information resource mainly written for trans US citizens considering emigrating to another country, although we hope it is useful beyond that.

Many of the authors have gone through the process themselves and want to share what they have learned.

Netherlands/Working In Tech

From Trans World Express

Considerations

If you're planning on working in tech in the Netherlands, it's worth reading The Trimodal Nature of Software Engineering Salaries in the Netherlands and Europe to get an understanding of the different bands of compensation you might encounter while job searching.

Because tech jobs are generally well compensated, they are also a good candidate for the highly skilled migrant visa as a means of gaining residency (and the various benefits that come with it) You'll need to confirm that the company you apply to is a recognized sponsor.

Job Boards

  • LinkedIn - LinkedIn remains a heavily used tool for Dutch tech companies to find employees.
  • Tweakers - Tweakers is a Dutch tech site (price comparison, tech news, forums, job board, etc). This is for predominately Dutch speaking roles only.

Language Requirements

While most larger tech companies have a mix of international employees from many language backgrounds, they tend to default to English as the office language. However if the company is small or not an actual tech company (just a tech job in a non-tech company), it's a good idea to confirm up front if there is any expectation of Dutch competence.
